HRCI® Recertification Credits, also referred to as Professional Development Credits (PDCs), are units of continuing education that certified professionals must accrue to sustain their credentials (e.g., PHR®, SPHR®). Each credential requires the accumulation of a specified number of credits over ayear recertification cycle.

The number of credits awarded is contingent on the course’s duration and content. Each HRCIapproved course will clearly state the total number of credits and their classification (e.g., General HR, Business, or Global).

Upon successful completion of aapproved training course, participants will receive a certificate of attendance. This document includes the course title, completion date, and the official HRCI® Activity ID or reference number.

HRCI®approved courses typically cover a range of subjects within the HR Body of Knowledge. These include, but are not limited to: HR strategy, workforce planning, talent acquisition, compensation and benefits, employment law, organizational development, HR analytics, and leadership.

Each HRCI®approved course will provide an official Activity ID issued by HRCI. This serves as evidence that the program meets the Institute’s recertification standards.

Yes. Participating in HRCI®approved training courses is a recognized and efficient method for earning recertification credits and maintaining your certification status without the need to retake the certification exam.

To earn an HRCI credential, candidates must successfully pass a rigorous examination that evaluates both theoretical knowledge and practical experience across core HR domains. Exams comprisechoice andbased questions, designed to simulateworld HR challenges. Eligibility is determined by reviewing educational background and professional experience.

Eligibility varies by certification level. Whilelevel certifications such as aPHR and aPHRi do not require prior professional experience, advanced certifications generally necessitate a combination of education and verifiable HR experience. Applicants must submit relevant documentation during the application process for review. Full eligibility criteria are detailed on the HRCI website.

To maintain certification, professionals must either:

  • Retake the exam every three years, or
  • Earn the required number of recertification credits within theyear cycle through approved learning and professional activities (e.g., workshops, webinars, teaching, publishing, etc.).

Credits must be logged and submitted through the candidate’s HRCI profile before certification expiration.

Recertification ensures that HR professionals remain up to date with evolving best practices, legislation, and leadership strategies. The process is designed to be flexible, allowing individuals to accrue credits through diverse learning channels including based experiences, reading, teaching, webinars, and formal training. Regular recertification validates a professional’s continued competence and commitment to lifelong learning.
